With over 3,800 colleges and universities in the United States, the process of selecting a college can be overwhelming for families. Parents must help their children make decisions based upon many factors, including college cost, program availability, admissions processes, financial aid, finding scholarships and more.

Questions to consider include:

• Is your child enrolled in the Recommended High School Plan or Distinguished High School Plan? What is the difference?

• Can costs be reduced by taking college-level courses while in high school, such as dual credit, articulated credit, tech prep, or advanced placement?

• Which college entrance exams should your child take? PSAT/NMSQT, SAT/ACT, THEA, or Accuplacer, or all of them?

• What scholarships are available? As Baytown’s community college, Lee College wants to help students reach their higher education destination, whether that destination is Lee College, another two-year college, or a four-year university.

A free college prep workshop for parents will take place Tuesday, Feb. 16th in the Bayer Conference Center, located on the second floor of the Student Center on Lee College Campus. Representatives from Lee College and the University of Texas-Dallas will be available to help parents or guardians learn more about both the community college and university experience.

Ceramics Instructor Jennifer Herzberg is leading the Bowl-a-Thon on Saturday, February 27, 2010 ~ 10 to 2 p.m., in the Ceramics Studio, room W28 at the McNulty Haddick Complex. Empty Bowls is an international effort to fight hunger, implemented in Houston to benefit the Houston Food Bank. The unique lunch fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010, and is collaboration between Houston area ceramists, woodturners and artists working in all media, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and Lawndale Art Center, and is sponsored by Whole Foods Market and Sweet Tomatoes.

For a minimum $25 donation, attendees receive a simple lunch of soup, bread and water, and then select a bowl from hundreds of one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted bowls donated by Houston area ceramists and craft artists. The empty bowls serve as a reminder of all the empty bowls in our community and the world. The event is being held at neighboring Museum District museums, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, 4848 Main Street, and Lawndale Art Center, 2912 Main Street.

The Houston Food Bank is the largest source of free and low-cost food for hungry people in 18 southeast Texas counties. The Houston Food Bank, founded in 1982, is a certified member of Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network.

Individuals who have an interest in becoming a teacher can attend the “I Want To Be A Teacher Day” on Friday, Feb. 19 from 9:00 a.m., to Noon at the Student Center. Meet veteran teachers who will share their experiences and be ready to participate in hands-on activities. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to explore the career of teaching. Our current exhibit is the work of DJ Brewer. It will be on display in the SAC Gallery in MHC through February 26 with a Closing Reception on February 23 from 5:30 until 7:00. DJ works with photography and also Ceramics. This work is all photographic.

We recognize the personal nature of some of the questions.  However, all information is required to be considered for the scholarship.  Responses will remain confidential.  Incomplete applications will be rejected.  Recipients will be required to sign up for a least six semester hours during fall and spring terms and at least three semester hours during the summer.  If awarded, the scholarships can be available starting Summer 2010.

You will want to start early to obtain the following:

• Official Transcripts:  You will need to attach a copy of your high school and/or college transcript(s). 
• Three letters of recommendation are required.  Contact information, phone numbers, addresses, and e-mails of the people providing the recommendations are requested so the recommendations can be easily verified.

You will need to submit an essay in 300 words or less describing the following:

• Your reasons for applying
• Career goals
• Related experience
• School honors
• Community activities/service
• Any unusual expenses or circumstances

Application Deadline is March 12, 2010 12:00pm in GCCISD Personnel Office, or in Ms. Landers’ office at Lee College in Gym 114.
